Summer 2008: Theme: Science and Spirituality

Send Us Your Thoughts About Science

For the Summer issue of WynterGreene we will be exploring Science and Spirituality. Can science can be reconciled with contemporary Pagan religions. Can the pursuit of knowledge in areas of physics, chemistry, biology and medicine contribute to spiritual growth, or does it detract from the mystery and mysticism of religion?

To this end, we are inviting you to briefly send us (via email) your thoughts and beliefs on the subject. Can they be reconciled? How do you define science, religion, and magic? Where are they similar and where do they differ? Please try to keep the total length of your contributions to under 150 word and include a 5-10 word snapshot-biography of yourself (example: name/job/education and religious practice). We'll print as many of the contributions that we receive before April 28th as space will permit.

Summer Theme: Science

Well, the Spring issue is in at layout. That means that we're gearing up for summer--despite the feet of snow on the ground!

Our summer issue this year will carry the theme Science and Spirituality. We are thrilled to have Rosanne Seguin, one of WynterGreene Advisory Board members and a Montreal-Area research scientist, as Guest Editor for this issue. Here is the description of what she has in store for you:

Science and Spirituality: Are they irreconcilable? We are aware of the contributions science makes to fields of physics, chemistry, biology and medicine. Can the pursuit of knowledge in these areas enhance the seeking of truth and contribute to a spiritual awakening? Or does the scientific method preclude any recognition of that which cannot be measured and studied? As spiritual practitioners, do we risk impoverishing our spirituality if we chose to ignore science and its contributions? Through a dialogue with pagans who function in the realm of scientific study, we will attempt to address these questions.

La science et la spiritualité: sont-elles irréconciliables? La science contribue grandement à des découvertes dans les domaines de la physique, de la chimie, de la biologie et de la médecine. La quête de connaissance dans ces domaines peut-elle accroître la recherche de la vérité et participer à un éveil spirituel? La méthode scientiique ne rejette-elle pas plutôt la reconnaissance de ce qui ne peut être mesuré et étudié? En tant que praticiens spirituels, risquons-nous d’appauvrir notre spiritualité en ignorant les avancées de la science? Dans une tentative de trouver une réponse à ces questions, nous nous sommes entretenus avec des païens œuvrant au sein de la recherche scientiique.

Spring Issue Coming Together

The Spring issue, themed "Men's Mysteries" with content coordinated by Taras, is coming along nicely. Thank you Taras for conceptualising this issue and soliciting articles for what promises to be a fascinating and lively issue. And thank you to everyone who contributed articles to it.

In the issue, we will be looking at men's mysteries and male spirituality from several men's persepectives, including that of a gay man, as well as from a mother's perspective. We also highlight two men's circles, how they came into being and what role men's circles play in male spirituality, and specifically pagan spirituality.

We expect to be finished the copy gathering and editing process mid-month, after that the layout process will begin. Expect the issue to be in stores and mailboxes in early April, just in time for Spring!

Grants and Subsidies

One of the constant projects on the to do list of WynterGreene's advisory board is to look into grants and subsidies, in particular the publication assistance programs.

But then we read stories about the hoops that Canadian magazines seem to have to jump through to get these subsidies, like this one on membership/subscriber requirements for associations publishing magazines (like us), and this one about what constitutes Canadian content, and we get very discouraged. Still we believe it is possible, we just need to find the time--and a volunteer--to check it all out and get the ball rolling...

Winter Issue Update

We are currently putting the finishing touches on our Winter issue. The issue is themed Beyond Wicca and it examines non-Wiccan Pagan traditions. Most of the submissions that we received actually centred around reconstructionist traditions, making us wonder if we shouldn't have called it, The Reconstruction Issue!

The issues is in the final stages of production and should be out in stores and mailboxes shortly after Yule.

Autumn Issue is in Stores!

The autumn issue of WynterGreene, focussing in on the theme Prayer, is now in stores. We are also pleased to announce that this issue of WynterGreene was printed on 100% post-consumer recycled paper by a print-shop in Montreal specialising in environmentally- and socially-responsibly printing, Mardigrafe. As well, the paper used for the cover (Mohawk) was produced in a factory that uses wind-generated electricity, and the paper used for the inside pages of the magazine (Cascades DP100) was produced using energy generated from biogas (basically recaptured gas from compost). Enjoy!

Exchange Binders Updated

The WynterGreene exchange binders, graciously housed at the Montreal Pagan Resource Centre (MPRC) for your perusing pleasure, have been updated!

What are the exchange binders, you ask? Basically WynterGreene exchanges with other Pagan and alternative spirituality magazines. This means that we send them copies of WynterGreene and they send us copies of their publication(s). It's a way for magazine editors and publishers to see what each other are doing and to share ideas. It seemed a shame for all these wonderful magazines to languish on the personal bookshelves of our Managing Editor, so the MPRC offered to hold onto them for us and make them available to visitors for on-site consultation.

Gender roles within North American society are changing, and these changes are reflected in NeoPaganism. Among all the discussion of Mother Earth and Goddess energy, where does the God fit in? Is there a specific role for men within NeoPaganism? Is there a difference between male and female energy? What are the unique or distinguishing characteristics of male energy? How is that energy used? What responsibilities does a man have toward other men, women, society, and himself?

Harvest Issue Underway

The process of putting together the Harvest 2007 issue has begun. Thank you to everyone who sent something in for this issue. The submissions that we've received have been sent out to copy editors for editing and to illustrators for artwork. We have a nice cross-section of articles for the issue, however once again we seem to be lacking in french content. When I realised that our french content would be lean, I tried to get permission to translate a section on prayer from a popular english book on Wicca, but I have yet to receive a response from the publishing house. I'm hoping an approval comes in soon, otherwise I'll have a hole that I'll be scambling to fill next week!

WynterGreene is welcoming submissions for our Fall/Harvest issue themed"Prayer".

Prayer. What does it mean to pray? Is prayer a part of contemporary Paganpractice? Many of us meditate or have some sort of daily practice, but isthis prayer? What about rituals and songs of gratitude? Spells? Poetry andart? How is Pagan prayer different or similar to prayer in other world religions? What does prayer mean to you and your practice?
